Queens District Attorney’s Office Spring Internship

The Office of the Queens County District Attorney is currently seeking applicants for our Spring Legal Internship 2021, which will run from January through April 2021.  This is an un-paid, for-credit opportunity.

District Attorney Melinda Katz’s goal of building the finest prosecutor’s office in the state is making the Queens District Attorney’s office the choice for talented and motivated attorneys.

She has assembled an unparalleled leadership team of top-notch career prosecutors, some from within the office itself and some who came to Queens from every major prosecutor’s office in the metropolitan area. In addition, she has added talented staff with diverse backgrounds; for example, the office’s first Conviction Integrity Unit is headed by a veteran of the Innocence Project. Together, they are individuals who share her vision and will assist the DA in making the Queens District Attorney’s Office a well-managed and thoroughly professional public office.

This
year the Spring Internship Program has been designed to provide law students with an outstanding opportunity to learn about the Queens District Attorney’s Office, which serves the most diverse county in the country. Interns will have the unique experience to see what a transformation looks like as the Office takes on a bold new course to achieve a more forward looking and fair prosecution model. They will be assigned to bureaus, some of which are newly created, and work with Assistant District Attorneys. Depending on the assignment, interns will engage in many aspects of prosecutorial work, such as: research and writing; case preparation; discovery compliance; motion practice; civilian and police interviews; evidence analysis; and investigative work on gang cases, economic crimes, and our new Conviction Integrity Unit.

Diverse and Cosmopolitan

The areas of special emphasis in our office are, naturally, heavily influenced by the characteristics of our jurisdiction, Queens County. More than two million people form a remarkable polyglot of neighborhoods and ethnic groups that make the county the most diverse and cosmopolitan area in the world. The county contains almost half of the city’s Asian population, as well as large communities of Caribbean, African, European, South and Central American people. This county is the most linguistically diverse place on Earth, with 138 languages spoken.

The Office of The Queens County District Attorney is an equal opportunity employer with a strong commitment to the diversity of our organization and workforce.

Requirements and Application Process

Time Commitment: The internship begins in January and ends in April, accommodating varied law school schedules. Students must work a minimum of 12 -15 hours weekly. Subject to the health and safety of interns and QDA staff, this will be a hybrid program with remote assignments and minimal in person appearance in our office. COVID-19 health and safety precautions will be adhered to for all in person appearances.

Eligibility: Second and first semester third year students are eligible for internship placement. Preference will be made to students who have not previously participated in a QDA internship.
