The Queens County District Attorney's Office has an opening for a Manager in the Forensic Mental Health Unit.

Job Responsibilities:

The specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting ADAs in handling cases involving defenses such as not guilty by reason of Mental Disease or Defect, or Extreme Emotional Disturbance.
  • Assisting ADAs in handling appropriate pleas of Not Responsible by Reason of Mental Disease or Defect.
  • Handling all subsequent hearings that result in the post-plea determinations that the defendant suffers from a Dangerous Mental Disorder, or is currently Mentally Ill, or is not Mentally Ill.
  • If a defendant is committed after a finding, handling all future hearings regarding the defendant’s status; hearings may be held at the mental health facility.
  • Assisting ADAs in hearings in which a claim is made by the defense that the defense is not fit to proceed in a pending prosecution.
  • Assisting ADAs in subsequent fitness proceedings.

Qualifications:

          Required:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience as a prosecutor in New York State
  • Extensive knowledge of NY Penal and Criminal Procedure Law
  • Felony jury trial experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Superior organizational, multi-tasking, and case management skills
  • Existing knowledge of a prosecutor’s discovery obligations

            Preferred:

  • Substantial experience handling cases involving psychiatric defenses
  • Substantial experience handling fitness to proceed hearings
  • Management experience

Salary and title will be commensurate with experience.  Salary range from $114,675 to $158,000.
