Description

 

The Office of the Queens County District Attorney is seeking Reporters/Stenographers for our Grand Jury Bureau to take and transcribe confidential Grand Jury testimony, which often entails sensitive matters and expert testimony. Typical tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Reporting to the Grand Jury to take verbatim testimony on stenographic machines and case catalyst software
  2. Transcribing minutes of the testimony using appropriate computer programs
  3. Keeping accurate records and files of cases
  4. Appearing in court to testify as to the accuracy of statements or testimony and of circumstances surrounding interrogations
  5. Proficient in taking two-voice dictation at an average rate of 175 words per minute
  6. The ability to transcribe testimony in a timely fashion for ADA’s and judge’s review
  7. The ability to read back testimony from notes for Grand Jury and/or court proceedings
  8. The performance of other duties, as required

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma, or equivalent, and a Graduate Certificate at 225 WPM from a Court Reporting Institution; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.

For current City employees, a permanent civil service title is highly desired.

Appointment Requirement: 
At the time of the appointment interview, you will be required to demonstrate your proficiency to take two-voice dictation, using a stenotype machine, at the rate of 175 words  per minute and to transcribe same. 

Note: Generally, hours for the position are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, work outside those hours may occasionally be necessary depending on the Grand Jury schedule. New York City residency required.

Starting salary is $69,000, and increases to $72,353 after passing and appointed from the Reporter/Stenographer civil service exam or attaining a bachelor’s degree. After two years with a permanent civil service status and successful testing at 200 WPM, salary increases to $85,540. Upon the completion of six years in the position, salary will increase to $91,781.
