The Office of the Queens County District Attorney (QDA) is currently seeking applicants for a Trial Preparation Assistant (TPA) within our Alternative Sentencing Unit. This unit provides a variety of clinical services to criminal justice involved individuals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Liaise with QDA staff to facilitate Rehabilitation Program Restoration Services (RPRS) Bureau work, including liaising with the District Attorney, Executive staff, supervisory staff, and ADAs.
- Maintain the caseload for specialized court parts, as assigned, which includes case preparation for daily court appearances. Report directly to the assigned ADA(s) for the specialized court part.
- Liaise with NYPD, victims/witnesses, defendants, court staff, defender organizations, and community-based organizations to provide case management support.
- Gather/create/compile paperwork to facilitate case management.
- Draft legal documents, orders, memos, motions, and correspondence, including some legal research.
- Obtain information from court stakeholders, including judges, court staff, defense attorneys, ADAs, treatment providers, and fellow stakeholders at external organizations and agencies. This includes, but is not limited to, district attorney’s offices, defender organizations, police departments, probation department, parole departments, in New York state and nationwide.
- Assist attorneys and case managers in court to provide status updates, as needed
- Maintain appropriate records.
- Perform all other relevant duties as determined by the program supervisor, Bureau Chief, and QDA executive staff.
Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree with educational focus on criminal justice or related education and/or work experience is preferred. Candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or other work in the criminal justice field will be given preference. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
The TPA must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with attorneys, and members of other city agencies including the courts, defense bar, NYPD, and animal protection groups, including the ASPCA. Those best suited for the position will be highly organized, self-starters adept at identifying and resolving problems while recognizing those issues requiring the assistance of an attorney.
Job Details:
Entry level salary (non-negotiable) is $55,000; upon completion of two years of service, the salary is $60,000.
