Description

The Office of the Queens County District Attorney (QDA) seeks a Trial Preparation Assistant (TPA)/Paralegal to support the Crime Strategies & Intelligence Bureau (CSIB) which is responsible for gathering and analyzing crime data and intelligence to drive QDA’s strategies on crime reduction and public safety.  Members of CSIB work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies (primarily the New York City Police Department), bureaus within QDA, and other stakeholders within the community to identify and study crime trends, groups, and individuals most responsible for driving crimes that impact our communities including violent crime, theft, fraud, and quality of life offenses.

This position offers the unique opportunity to help build and develop the brand new CSIB under the intelligence and data driven prosecution model (IDPM) which utilizes cutting-edge data science applications, analytical tools, and intelligence gathering systems to identify and address the community’s principal crime drivers.  The TPA will work independently on creating data and intelligence reports for senior QDA staff; supporting the CSIB attorneys, investigators, and analysts; and will guide the flow of information between law enforcement, QDA bureaus, and CSIB.

Specific duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinating with QDA prosecutors, investigators, analysts, and the NYPD on gathering, storing, and analyzing crime data and actionable intelligence.
  • Assist the Director, ADAs, and analysts in performing research, compiling and analyzing complex information/data regarding crime trends, crime drivers, and geographical information; gathering relevant data, information and/or documentation from a variety of sources.
  • Coordinating, analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting intelligence and crime data in preparing routine and special reports for the benefit of legal, investigative, and support personnel.
  • Coordinating with QDA bureaus in offering litigation support services including evaluation for enhanced sentencing or alternatives to incarceration, witness background and social media analysis, and acting as a liaison to NYPD Precinct Field Intelligence Officers for assistance on active prosecutions and investigations.
  • Preparation of materials for CSIB protocols, training manuals, classes, and data/intelligence analysis.
  • Assisting the Director of CSIB in preparation for and/or attendance at meetings of City and State law enforcement agencies and bodies including the NYPD Precinct Commands, New York State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and DEA Task Force.
  • Maintain working knowledge and up-to-date certification where applicable of QDA and other law enforcement computer applications (e.g., Case Tracking, QDocs, CACS, NYPD Booking and Complaint System, eJustice, PIMS, DMV, Back-End Client, LIMS, MIDAS, Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Assist in the acquisition, development, and use of industry-current and in-house proprietary applications to gather, analyze, and process data to produce a complete model of crime trends in Queens neighborhoods.
  • Perform clerical and related duties as needed including answering phones, taking messages, faxing, scanning and copying.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Director of CSIB.

Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree with an educational focus on criminal justice or related education and/or experience. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or other work in the criminal justice field/and or intelligence analysis/data science.  All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

TPA’s must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with attorneys, law enforcement, staff, witnesses and convicted persons and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including strong follow-up skills, accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines; adhere to strict requirements regarding legal records management, data protection, and privacy/confidentiality; working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and advanced Excel experience is also required.

STARTING SALARY (NON-NEGOTIABLE): $46,000.; upon completion of two years of City service, salary: $50,083
