Description

The Office of the Queens County District Attorney (QDA) is currently seeking applicants for an Appeals Bureau Trial Preparation Assistant (TPA)/Paralegal position to help support the Appeals Bureau, part of the QDA Appeals and Special Litigation Division.  The Appeals Bureau is responsible for handling all post-conviction litigation in state and federal courts.

Appeals TPAs/Paralegals perform a variety of duties.  They may assist Assistant District Attorneys with preparing responses to appellate briefs and motions.  This work may include legal research, composing correspondence, calling, or emailing other organizations for information, retrieving copies of documents from other bureaus in the Office and court files, and keeping track of various cases for our internal record keeping system. They may also have their own workload of cases which would include responding, under the supervision of an attorney, to basic briefs or motions and Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and exhibit requests.

Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies or related area or equivalent education and/or experience. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or in another similar capacity or candidates with an A.B.A. approved paralegal certificate. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with staff at all levels and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including strong follow-up skills, accuracy, and the ability to meet deadlines is also required.   Candidates must be fully trained in Word, Excel, and familiar with Microsoft Outlook email system. Applicants must be able to work Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Applicant information:

Entry level salary (non-negotiable) is $55,000; upon completion of two years of continuous service, salary: $60,000.
