The Queens County District Attorney’s Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit is seeking an experienced Trial Preparation Assistant.
The TPA will provide administrative, investigative, and grand jury and trial preparation support to the attorneys in the Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit. This work will include: assisting attorneys with discovery matters; locating witnesses, scheduling interviews, arranging for witness transportation; notifying NYPD officers to appear; preparing subpoenas for grand jury and trial; communicating with ASPCA and ASPCA partner representatives; implementing and maintaining databases with case and investigation information; implementing and maintaining repository of ASPCA records; implementing and maintaining repository of court-ordered animal-possession bans; implementing and maintaining database of Dept. of Health Animal Abuse Registry referrals; responding to requests for information from attorneys; obtaining case information from the ASPCA, animal protection groups, NYPD, and other law enforcement agencies; monitoring and reporting on Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit helpline.
Preferred Education and Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree with educational focus on criminal justice or related education and/or work experience is preferred. Candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or other work in the criminal justice field will be given preference. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
The TPA must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with attorneys, and members of other city agencies including the courts, defense bar, NYPD, and animal protection groups, including the ASPCA. Those best suited for the position will be highly organized, self-starters adept at identifying and resolving problems while recognizing those issues requiring the assistance of an attorney.
Job Details:
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
Entry level salary (non-negotiable) is $55,000; upon completion of two years of City service, the salary is $60,000.
